You've said yourself many times that here the culture is different from SV.
protectionism -> no competition -> worse productivity -> inferior products -> less $. The short term potential benefits are traded for long term gains.

2) Can we realistically ever openly compete with American startups? Europe appears to have lost a lot of time in this space.

I think we should, otherwise we'll gradually lose our expertise and slide into irrelevance.
Also, it's going to be the US vs China, Europe can be the third power or a battleground.
